Grade 12 learner Ashton Dry recently hosted a successful Cupcakes of Hope fundraiser at Southcity Christian School and Southcity College, raising an incredible R11 000 to support children fighting cancer.
For Ashton, this initiative is deeply personal.
On February 8, 2019, Ashton was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. He spent most of that year in hospital, undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and eventually a life-saving bone marrow transplant in November.
Now, five years in remission and officially cancer-free, Ashton wanted to mark the sixth anniversary of his diagnosis in the most meaningful way possible — by giving back.
“Since this marks exactly six years since my diagnosis, I thought it would be really special to hold the fundraiser around that date,” Ashton shared.
During his own battle, Cupcakes of Hope was a source of comfort and support.
“They visited us in the hospital, brought gifts to lift our spirits, and even helped with medical bills,” he said.
“Before I was even at Southcity, the school held a Beanie Day for me, and I can’t tell you how much that meant. It made me feel so loved and supported. It shows just how much small acts of kindness can mean to kids going through tough times.”
Ashton’s journey has now come full circle. What once was a time of struggle has transformed into a mission to bring hope to others.
We are so proud of Ashton and grateful for the incredible compassion shown by the students, staff, and community at Southcity. Fundraisers like these are not only vital to our work — they are a testament to the power of kindness, resilience, and paying it forward.
Thank you, Ashton, for being a true inspiration.
