Meet Chris – Fighting Cancer with Courage

Chris was born in July 2012, one of twins. His sister, Chinel, is not just his best friend but also his bone marrow match, a gift of hope for the future.
On 31 August 2022, Chris was diagnosed with Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML). Since then, his life has been filled with doctors’ visits, treatments, and incredible challenges that no child should have to face. Yet, through it all, Chris remains brave, positive, and determined.

Right now, Chris is in Grade 7. He loves MMA fighting and rugby and was thrilled to play for his school’s first team, a highlight of his young sporting career. His dream is to one day wear the green and gold jersey as a Springbok prop.

But for now, his biggest battle is off the field. Chris receives chemo every day in pill form, and once he is strong enough, doctors plan to start him on intense “red devil” chemotherapy to prepare him for a bone marrow transplant, with Chinel as his 100% match. He will spend about 28 days in isolation during this treatment. The goal is to get him into remission within the next 6 months and only then can the transplant happen.

This journey is not only emotionally exhausting but also financially overwhelming. Medical bills, supplements, blood tests, and chemo co-payments add up to more than R234 000 over the next six months.

Estimated Costs

  • Initial medical aid shortfall (self-pay gap before cover starts): R43 323
  • Blood tests: R45 000
  • Supplements: R28 200
  • Chemo co-payments: R118 800

Total: R234 523
